Covington finally
has a city manager

The Covington City Commission has selected David W. Johnston to be the next City Manager. Johnston was manager of a town in Washington state called Maple Valley (population 25,686) for seven years.

Last December he was chosen to run the city of Claremont in New Hampshire but that didn't work out. Johnston, who also worked in local government in Indiana and Illinois, saw Claremont as having good environment for the sort of “professional challenge” he was seeking, a newspaper there quoted.

“There is the issue of how to expand the tax base,” Johnston said about Claremont. “I enjoy economic development and I look forward to working in that arena."

After that job fell through, Johnston went to work for a consulting firm in Seattle for a few months.

With so many services now undertaken by regional authorities, such as the Water District, there really isn't much left for a Covington KY city manager to do except economic development which has, so far, seen so-so success.

It's well-known that Mayor Joe Meyer has been running the city behind the scenes while the city looked for a real city manager even though his job is to attend ribbon-cuttings and act as master of ceremonies at commission meetings. He has no real power.

Meyer can go back to that, now.
